(6/22/99 – 12/18/13)

Reason was an amazingly talented and versatile partner in agility, obedience, and herding. But more than that, he was my best friend and my soul mate.

I remember looking back at that beautiful graying face after leading out in agility, or before sending him on an outrun at the post in herding, or recalling him or sending him away in obedience. I remember wanting time to stand still.

Unfortunately, time does not stand still and that beautiful soul left this earth. I miss him more than words can express.

Reason was retired in May of 2011 after running in agility one month short of his 12th birthday. He still did short agility sequences and some obedience as well as helping me sort and set sheep until I lost him.

I consider myself the luckiest person to have had this wonderful partner at my side in all that we did together over the years.

This video was a tribute to Reason on his 10th birthday

Reason – Open B – HIT, Land O’ Lakes KC

This video is my all time favorite obedience performance with Reason. It was in a very busy venue at the Land O’ Lakes KC in downtown St. Paul, MN. Reason took High In Trial that day with a 198 1/2.

Here is a playlist of some of Reason’s obedience trials. It starts with the video above, but you can skip to the next video (the button to the right of the play arrow) if you want to see more.

Reason Agility Playlist

Here is a playlist of some of Reason’s agility trials. The first video in Sioux Falls was the last time he was trialed, in April of 2011. He was still competitive at his regular height at the age of 12. Amazing boy!!

Reason’s Story

Reason was born on summer solstice in June of 1999. He was the light of my life. He was incredibly versatile and focused. After coming off the herding field after pushing sheep around, he could easily switch gears and then run a fast and focused agility sequence or perform obedience exercises with style and flash.

He was by far my most talented obedience partner as he had such a flashy heeling style combined with a blazing fast recall and retrieve.

Reason finished his AKC Herding Championship in April of 2007. He went into that trial needing 3 points to finish. That weekend, he won five out of the six classes and two majors, 1 HIT and 1 RHIT. He went home with 18 points for the weekend, which put him at 27 points. Reason had an Advanced B sheep title, Advanced B duck title, Advanced A sheep title, and Advanced A duck title. He also set out sheep for local herding trials.

Reason brought me into the world of agility because he needed more work and I wanted to join the popular sport. Because of his intensity and ground speed combined with me being a new agility handler, it was a difficult change for me. I was challenged with learning agility handling at high speed. Reason was a patient partner and we eventually became a great team. He retired from agility one Super Q away from his ADCH and one double Q short of finishing his MACH. We qualified and competed in AKC Agility Nationals in 2007.

Because of my love (and Reason’s talent) for herding and agility, his obedience career was fit into our schedule when I had available time. He got his UD by competing and placing on every leg in Utility B. He had 10 High In Trial’s in his career. Although we didn’t have enough time to finish his OTCh, it was always a thrill stepping into the ring with him. Reason was invited to the 2009 AKC Obedience Invitational by winning an AKC Obedience Invitational Regional qualifier in April of 2009. His heeling style is something that I will never forget. It was magical!!
